Photo

I occasionally post photos to my blog when I think they are worthy "art" pieces.
This is one of those. Perhaps one of the best photos I've ever taken, and not just because I was there.

Fine art scribbles

Freeform Discontextual formalist ballpoint pen drawings. Pretty much totally automatic process. Anything you think you may recognize was not intended. Forms do seem to emerge on there own. Im not sure why I'm suprised that these types of drawings keep getting better over the years.

Saying goodbye to old faces.

Sold these paintings. Selling a painting is like saying goodbye to an old friend. Especially some that are years and years old. You get used to having them around. It's a nice motivation to make more though.

Claws Monster

A collaboration between me and my son. He did some loose penciling I did some loose inking under his direction.

Sketchbook Headdresses

Late night mech suit

Fun frames

Sometimes it is fun just to draw a frame and populate it with lines and composition. In this case I was watching the movie Death on the Nile so things took on a very Agatha Christie quality as I was searching for things outside me to stick into the frames. The important part was the practice and having fun. I could see taking any one of these images and transferring them onto canvas for an interesting painting or two. My next phase of development will be learning to do this kind of drawing but quickly building color into the image for practice.

Valley Art Mural Article on Oregon Live

Check out the article about the mural that I've designed that's being planned for this summer in our home town. Stay tuned!

Quick science fiction vehicles.

More vehicles done in bed, right before going to sleep.
Watercolor pencils and pencil and pen.

The Clay that Woke art prints.

8 different clay that woke art prints.
I'll have these with me at Gamestorm Saturday.
I'm not sure what to expect or where I'll be able to sell them but I'll have them anyway.
Limited run. 8 different illustrations. $5.00 a piece. Cash or card. Signed. Protective bag.
The picture doesn't do them justice. They look really great. No banding in the greyscale. Slick. #80 Mohawk paper.
I'm really happy Paul Czege offered me the licence to put these together. And I'm really excited with how they came out. It's a nice cap on some of the best illustration work I've done so far.

Minotaur gladiator

Third drawing of the day after scribbling my dream down. My son, looking through a book, asks me "why don't pictures move?" Sometimes I forget just how much media does move these days. I savor still images, but there is more moving media being made all the time maybe still images and book illustration and comics will start to look like Egyptian heiroglyphics, some outdated quaint mode of expression.

Drawing assignment demonstration drawings

In this assignment I had students examine light on a form by modeling a little piece of clay

The top illustration was used to examine how the different parts of light can be seen expressed on the form.

The bottom image was a quick example of the assignment. Six studies in boxes. The object in each box had to go out on three of the box sides.

Illustration for Open Ways

Open ways is now an online publication. It was a pagan resource quarterly magazine that I felt compelled to contribute to. Mainly because the art in the issues smacked me as uninspiring and lacking any gravity. I freely contributed but in the end they made the choice to feature full page stereotypical "witch" pin-ups over my black and white images. Maybe my images were not "pagan" enough. Lol. I identify with paganism only as an interesting inclusive nonchristian tradition of imagination, potential and ideaspace and I take that seriously enough. A Christian newsletter would probably push my illustrations of their ideaspace to the back page too. There is more to be said here, I will save that for another time.
This image was for the 2010 Samhain edition and is called "the reaper."

Ape-People!

Rejected character race designs I inked just for practice and fun.

Hopefully the link below will work. If it does then you can see the finished approved image. I think my original drawing had some fun aspects but the final version is much more dynamic and "ape" looking.

Life Drawing 3/13/2014 Demonstration.

This is what happens when I work on a $4.00 piece of paper!
One of the great things about Rives BFK, 250gsm, 22" x 30" is that the surface can be manipulated far into the drawing process. In fact after my initial vine charcoal layout I built up tone using a paperstump and a chunk of water soluble graphite and then, after the washes had dried, I was able to erase some of the long light drips with a gum eraser. You can't do that on your regular paper. Also this stuff just loves water and stayed perfectly flat after the washes had been applied.
During the class we listened to Alex Grey and Scott McCloud's Ted Talks.

And I'm teaching Life Drawing next term at Portland Community College.
